Teach and Fly is a refresher course for teachers interested in increasing the scientific knowledge, scientific vocation, and 4C skills (collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking) of their students. This course specifically deals with the disciplines of ‘Genomics’ and ‘Science and Society’; with topics such as the manipulation of model organisms (Drosophila or fruit fly), personalized medicine, genomic editing, and science communication. Teachers will also have the opportunity to resolve any uncertainties they have about the project and its activities, in addition to providing the #MelanogasterCTF team with feedback about their experiences in the field, in the classroom and the laboratory.

Teach and Fly aims to ensure the continuity and proper development of the #MelanogasterCTF citizen science project in the Spanish towns that are already participating, as well as facilitating the project’s extension to other rural Spanish towns and the rest of the world.

Likewise, Teach and Fly allows the optimization of the scientific processes carried out by our citizens in order to facilitate their successful transfer to other European locations.

Establishing a personal bond with participants is vital to the success of #MelanogasterCTF. This link can only be established through face-to-face meetings, which gives interested parties like the scientists and teachers an opportunity to interact and share experiences.

Teach and Fly also includes three practical workshops:

  • #MelanogasterCTF project communication: How to value your participation in a scientific project at your school, and in your community.
  • Bioinformatics basics: How to implement the #MelanogasterCTF project modules.
  • Handling Drosophila: How to classify the flies by sex and species in the laboratory.

You can read more in the Teachers’ training section.
